Synopsis

What is the movie about?

This impeccable thriller explores the implications of indiscriminte eavesdropping. The audience watches as the "best bugger on the West Coast", Harry Caul, dives into the devious lives of his latest "marks" - a young couple, Ann (played by Cindy Williams) and Mark (played by Frederic Forrest). His client is the mysterious "director" (played by Robert Duvall, the young and handsome Harrison Ford plays his assistant, Martin Stett) who seems a bit too eger to get a recording of the conversation between his wife, Ann, and his wife's lover, Mark. His motives for this remain unclear until Harry Caul, upon listening to the recording one more time, finds a hidden utterance that changes the significance of a seemingly innocuous conversation entirely.

Coppola's outstanding classic is more relevant than ever now, in the era of CCTV cameras, almost 40 years later. Caul's techniques to refine the recording are so high-tech that every enigmatic word is made audible after the background echoes, whispers and buzzing harmonics are removed.

For phase I of my film project, I'll be analyzing the musical score of the entire film, with specific detail to the opening scene, the murder scene, and the closing scene.
