Classic Film Analysis

           For the romantic scenes with Eve Kendall (played by Eva Marie Saint) and George Kaplan in North by Northwest, Bernard Hermann composed love music which developed throughout the film. In using different time signatures for the same piece, BErnard Hermann in his musical score portrays the change of the two character's relationship throughout the course of the film.

            At first the love music is tentative in the dining car scene. It expresses the two characters' blossoming but hesitant attraction towards each other. Then it becomes more passionate in the first train scene. In the second train scene that closes the film, the score becomes ecstatic. In doing so to the musical score, Bernard Hermann was able to allow the audience to follow the emotions of the characters on screen using the acompanying musical composition.
